The standard session pinnie: open knit mesh, wide armholes, over the head in two seconds and off again at the whistle. It exists to separate two groups instantly at distance, and everything else about it is secondary to that.

Which is why the colour pair matters more than anything on the spec. Colours get chosen off a chart, indoors, in good light, with the swatches touching. They get judged from forty metres, at dusk, in the rain, over dark shirts, with both sets soaked and dark. Red against orange looks like an obvious pair on a chart and is one colour on a wet pitch.

So we choose pairs on value contrast — how light and how dark they are, rather than what they are called. A light and a dark stay a light and a dark whatever the weather does to them. Before you commit to four hundred, photograph the two swatches and look at the picture in black and white; if you cannot tell them apart there, neither can a coach.

Mesh weight is the other decision. A very open mesh is coolest and is see-through over a dark shirt, which quietly costs you contrast. We quote the knit, not just the word mesh.

One clearly light and one clearly dark, whatever the hues are. Contrast in value survives rain, dusk and distance; contrast in hue does not. Red and orange, or navy and black, look like a pair on a chart and merge on a wet pitch. Photograph your two swatches and look at the picture in black and white.

Is a lighter mesh better?

Cooler, yes. But a very open mesh worn over a dark shirt takes the shirt’s colour, so a pale pinnie reads much darker than the swatch did and you lose part of the contrast you paid for. We will tell you where that line is for the colours you have chosen.
